Just days after researchers demonstrated that some Apple iPhone and iPad owners have had their locations tracked by their devices, another security researcher revealed that Android phones, which use Google’s mobile operating system, store users’ geographic information in a very similar manner.

Citing security analyst Samy Kamkar, the Wall Street Journal today reported today that Google has been collecting location data from its Android smartphones.

When the phone recognizes a wireless network (regardless of whether or not it’s encrypted), it sends information, including GPS coordinates, “up to the mothership,” Kamkar wrote on his dell xps m1330 battery website.

Android technology for mobile devices was developed by Google along with a collaboration of hardware, software and telecom companies called the Open Handset Alliance. It was first officially revealed in 2007.

Android mobile phones use coding standards and applications that are open source, meaning anyone who has a development idea, whether they’re a professional or an amateur tinkering at home; can set about creating and releasing their innovations. Because no specific company owns the technology, developers are easily able to write new programs and apps, taking mobile computing to new levels at an unprecedented speed.

Google’s Android is predicted to overtake Apple’s iPhone to be the 2nd largest smartphone platform by 2012. “The sheer scale of Android releases should also play an important part, as many more smartphones will carry Android in coming years and should appeal to a wider base than narrower device ranges like the BlackBerry and iPhone lines,” said Forrester Analyst Ken Dulaney.

That’s a bold prediction for Google to topple the hottest, most buzzworthy phone in the world.  The first step in the Android attack, an advertising campaign Droid Does, has launched and we like what we see.  TechCrunch’s Jason Kincaid says, “Verizon isn’t pulling any punches: it calls out basically every major weakness on the iPhone, from its inability to run background applications to the App Store’s walled garden.
